5 Family Friendly Activities When Taking a Break from Skiing

November 27, 2017

Taking a break from the slopes? Wondering what to do with the kids?  Below are some fun options the whole family will enjoy while you are taking a break from skiing.

Soak in the Old Town Hot Springs
Soaking in the hot springs is great for tired ski legs and full body rejuvenation.  Old Town Hot Springs has been around for over 100 years because of the

natural Heart Spring and the healing mineral water in the eight pools.  Kids can test their rock climbing skills on the adventurous rock wall above the water, or quench their adrenaline cravings by swooshing down the water slides. Old Town Hot Springs is conveniently located downtown on the free city bus loop. Open year round from as early as 5 a.m. and as late as 10 p.m. Call 970.879.1828. for more info.

Hike/Snowshoe to Fish Creek Falls
Want to see a 280-foot waterfall just 10 minutes from downtown?  This quarter-mile hike is perfect when you still have energy and are up for a light adventure. From downtown Steamboat Springs, head north on 3rd street and make a right on Fish Creek Falls Road. At the end of the road you will come to the parking lot with access to two trailheads. The far left trailhead is handicap accessible (snow covered in the winter) with a wide-angle view of the waterfall. The other trailhead is for the more adventurous hiker who can handle the short, but steep hike down to the bridge which crosses the base of the falls.  Both are a quarter of a mile hiking distance.  Bring boots or sneakers and a camera to snap your next family holiday photo.

Make crafts at the Bud Werner Memorial Library
The library is a nice escape from the cold and offers daily programs for toddlers and kids. Bud Werner Memorial Library is open 7 days per week and is located downtown on 13th and Lincoln (also on free city bus stop). Your little ones will be sure to enlighten all of their senses with a variety of books, toys, games, computer station, and a fish aquarium tank with Nemo and Dory.  Check out www.steamboatlibrary.org for hours and programs.

"Finding Nemo" fans will love the aquarium at the Bud Werner Memorial Library

Snow Tube on a Ranch

Head out to Saddleback Ranch to experience snow tubing at a fourth-generation working cattle ranch.  Just 10 miles west of downtown Steamboat Springs, you will enter the Wild West among hundreds of cattle, horses and a few friendly cowboys and cowgirls.  Transportation may be provided.  Check out www.saddlebackranch.net or call 970.879.3711.

Saddleback Ranch is a fourth-generation working cattle ranch, so they're used to having little ones around exploring the grounds.

Indulge in an Old Fashion Soda Fountain
The best kept secret in town is the soda fountain at Lyon Drug (downtown on the corner of 9th and Lincoln).  This is a true old-fashioned soda fountain where kids can experience sitting at the 50s style diner with a bee bop flare. There's plenty of hot food on the menu, but be sure to delight in the well-known ice cream treats.  Kids and big kids alike will be sure to sweeten their smile after this unique treat.
