What do you get excited about for a new year? For some it might be new goals, both physically and mentally. For others it may mean a clean slate starting something fresh or new. The beauty of New Years is it can be anything you want it to be. It can be just another day, another year, or it can be new goals and traditions. After putting some thought into goals and ideas for 2018, I decided it would be fun to start a new tradition with my family this year.
Now that my kids are getting old enough to understand their feelings and remember family outings and adventures, I am starting a "Rememberance Jar." I am using my late Grandfather's crystal glass bowl, however it can be a simple mason jar or whatever you would like. Next to the bowl are cut out pieces of paper and a pen. When something fun or meaningful happens, we can write the memory on a piece of paper and put into the bowl. Writing membories can be as often as we would like, or maybe once a week. There are no rules. On December 31, 2018, we will read every piece of paper to remember the fun and memoriable things that happened throughout the year.
A perfect time to embrace this idea might be on a family vacation this winter. The bowl or jar does not have to travel with you, but perhaps take some notes of highlights that happened on the trip. You can type these highlights into your phone and write them down upon returning home. Or, maybe the kids will get excited about writing it on a pad/journal throughout the trip to bring home and put into the bowl. Whatever your method is, remember there are no rules. It is just a way to capture those special moments that are made together with each other.
If traveling to Steamboat, we hope you make lots of memories to add to your Rememberence Jar. Check out www.steamboat.net for fun ideas to make the best memories on your vacation.
