Recipe for a Perfect Date Day in Steamboat

July 31, 2019

Ahh, waking up in the mountains with a cool breeze coming through the window, and perhaps the smell of coffee brewing.  As you wake up to beautiful views in this quaint mountain town, there are countless ways to enjoy a date day in the ‘Boat.

Before you head out on a date adventure, be sure to fuel up at one of the many amazing breakfast locations in town.  My personal favorites are Freshies (located on hiway 40/Trafalgar Drive) and Creekside (downtown on 11th street).  Local, homemade breakfast entries will give you a healthy and hearty base to keep you going until your next meal.

For the adventurous couple looking to get out into the mountains for a day trip, drive about 45 minutes north to Clark, Colorado (hiway 40 to County Road 129).  The scenic drive meanders along the Elk River through beautiful ranch land and takes you to big mountain views of Hahns Peak and the Zirkel Wilderness area.  Take a hike in the Zirkels by turning right onto Seedhouse Road.  I recommend Three Island Lake (about 6 miles roundtrip) or Gold Creek Lake (about 6 miles out and back).  After the hike, take a dip in Steamboat Lake (State Park) and then stop by the Clark Store on your drive home for famous ice cream on the deck.

If wanting to stay more local in town, rent bikes and cruiser ride along the Yampa River Core Trail.  Stop by the Botanic Park to smell the flowers and have a romantic picnic.  Stroll through downtown where there are many shops and restaurants.  Sample olive oil and wine at Elevated Olive (downtown on main street and 7th).  If time permits, head up to Fish Creek Falls and do a quarter mile hike to a 280 foot waterfall.  Be sure to snap a photo as this enchanting waterfall is picture worthy.

After a full day of fun take a rinse and relax poolside or happy hour downtown on the Yampa River.  Continue onto dinner – over 40 restaurants to choose from.  I enjoy a date dinner downtown on the Yampa River at Aurum or E3 Steak House where outdoor seating is recommended for the best views.  Before ending your night, walk up to mainstreet and have a sweet treat.

Enjoy the long summer days in Steamboat and be sure to check out www.steamboat.net for lodging and more information.

*Be sure to pack plenty of water, snacks and layers.  Always keep an eye on the weather for mountain storms.
