Thank Your Ski Patrol

January 4, 2018

In the world of skiing, there are many people who aspire to be a ski patroller when they grow up. Sounds dreamy - go to work on the ski mountain every day, clear runs, set up ropes, ski first tracks, respond to falls... and injuries.  While ski patrol has its many perks, we often forget they are the first line of duty when an injury or accident occurs. They are also the people protecting us to ensure we are safe on the slopes. That means spending several hours outside in negative temperatures. It also adds up to long days, often arriving before the sun comes up and skiing down after dark. I talked to a few of my 'patrol' friends and they admit it is their dream job, but it's not easy work. It's both physically and mentally demanding. It's also rewarding, which is why so many people aspire to be a ski patroller. I often ski by patrol and will do a nod and say thanks. I appreciate the hours they put in to ensure safety on the slopes. While I look forward to seeing them on a lift or outside their shack, I sure do hope I never have to ride in their sleds. So, next time you see a 'ski patroler' say thank you for their hard work and service.

Below are some safety tips:

-Know the terrane and trail conditions, pick up a grooming report on the gondola
-Dress in layers, mountain weather can change quickly and varies as you go up in altitude
-Ski with a buddy and make meeting points if you split up
-Have questions, ask a friendly ambassador in yellow or stop by the Information Center at the base area
